BeatBox
Digital Artist-in-Residence Project with Con Artist Gallery (New York, NY)
BeatBox reframes the African and ceremonial roots of Hip-Hop into the context of music making for the future. Similar to the griots of West African origin who gathered drummers and instrumentalists in tribal ceremony as the "band" to to their narrative, Hip-Hop is known not only for its story telling capabilities, but for its ability to unity those once disconnected through narrative and celebration in rhythm.
Backed by samples from James Brown's Funky Drummer, BeatBox asks audiences to reframe music into a collaborative experience. It reaches to the past through the musical practice of "sampling" and looks to the future to discover new ways of building community around music in the technological era
